Alpha Delta Thanksgiving Gift-Giving 2020
Financial Scholarships to
Denny International Middle School - Dual Language Program
2018 Alpha Delta Chapter voted to 'adopt' the Dual Language program at Denny International Middle School, Seattle. Parent involvement has always been important to the success of all students; that has become even more evident as students complete the first quarter of the 2020-21 school year with the challenges brought by Covid-19, which are affecting all areas of our society. When Alpha Delta members considered organizing a holiday gift-giving activity for DDL students, member Patty Gomez, a DDL teacher, suggested that it would be more beneficial to help the parents who are struggling financially due to loss of employment brought about by business closures. These are the same parents who are being asked to step in at home and help with distance learning, so relieving some of their financial stress greatly benefits students academically. The emotional and financial stability of families are keys to success of all our children.
Alpha Delta Chapter members rallied quickly to collect donations so that checks could reach families by Thanksgiving. Within three weeks, members raised over $1,400 in donations, and provided financial scholarships for eight families whose students attend the Denny Dual Language program. Each family also received a letter in English and in Spanish to explain the grant and express appreciation for all that they do to support their student.
"Helping parents remain emotionally and morally strong will impact their students, who are already feeling the stress and anxiety of having to learn in a very strange world. I am thrilled that Alpha Delta will be able to spread some very much needed relief to some of the most vulnerable Denny Dual Language families," says Patty.
